How to Calculate Roof Square Footage
The simplest way to calculate roof square footage is to measure the building’s length and width, multiply them, then add a pitch factor. However, most homeowners need only a rough footprint estimate for budgeting — which is what this tool calculates.
For a more accurate measurement that accounts for pitch, use our Roof Size Calculator.
Basic Formula
- Flat Footprint Area = Length × Width
- Roofing Squares = Area ÷ 100
- Shingle Bundles = Squares × 3 (plus waste)
What Is a Roofing Square?
A roofing square equals exactly 100 square feet of roof area. It’s the standard unit contractors use to price materials and labor. A 2,000 sq ft roof = 20 squares. Most contractors quote replacement cost per square (e.g., “$450 per square installed”).
Average Roof Sizes by Home Type
| Home Type | Floor Area | Approx. Roof Area | Squares |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small bungalow | 800–1,000 sq ft | 1,000–1,400 sq ft | 10–14 squares |
| Average ranch | 1,200–1,600 sq ft | 1,500–2,200 sq ft | 15–22 squares |
| Two-story home | 2,000–2,800 sq ft | 1,400–2,200 sq ft | 14–22 squares |
| Large home | 3,000–4,000 sq ft | 2,000–3,200 sq ft | 20–32 squares |
Why Roof Area Differs from Floor Area
Two-story homes have a smaller roof relative to floor area because the second floor sits under the same roof as the first. Additionally, overhang extensions, dormers, and complex roof shapes add extra surface area beyond the basic footprint.
